To Quit, Or not to Quit, that is the Question Part - 2

This week I've been working on a pros and cons list. It was a little harder than I thought. So here is what I have come up with.

Quitting my job:

PROS:

* Regular Sleeping Schedule
* More time for my Etsy Shop
* Flexible Schedule
* No more Zombie Shifts! (9pm-5am)
* More time to Crochet
* All Holidays Off
* Spend more time with Family and Friends
* More time to Read
* 8 hours of sleep every night
* Save money on gas / wear and tear on my car
* No more working on Black Fridays
* Less Stress

CONS:

* Boredom / loneliness
* Less social interaction
* no employee discount
* no yearly income (making less money on Etsy... right now :) )

So there you have it. I'm not sure how to word the last con. Right now, I'm making more at my part-time job than I am on Etsy. But that could change. Or not. I'm not looking to make a lot of money, just a profit. Or just enough money to buy more yarn! :) I'm not expecting my Etsy shop to replace my part time job. I just want to have fun with it.

Here's a list of some alternative activities I could do:

* Work/Volunteer at the library
* Take Art classes (Pottery, Painting, Photography, etc.)
* Join Curves
* Learn to cook more homemade meals
* Start painting and drawing again
* Read more
* Learn to sew
* Do other hobbies: Cross stitch and Knit

I have more Pros than Cons, but I'm not sure some of the pros can really be called pros. And this list looks nice, but will I really stick with it?

I'm thinking of leaving in December now, instead of November. I want to leave on a good note. Black Friday is coming up, and I don't want them to be mad at me for leaving before then. So I will stick it out and work one more black Friday shift. I'm not sure when my last week will be, but I know I will leave before Christmas.

Let me know what you all think!! Thanks!

  1. Oh it's such a hard decision. I hate making that one. If you're even remotely considering it though it probably means you're ready for a change. It's hard to make a decision like this that changes your life but it's probably for the best. Maybe you'll find another part time job that you like better and suites your interests more. Maybe at a craft store or a yarn store? You've already picked when you're going to leave so it sounds like you're ready.

    Just some random thoughts for you! Give it some more thought and see how you feel. Good luck!

  2. If your main goal is to avoid the zombie shift, but you like the job, would they be open to a schedule change? You've got mega-seniority!!! That is, if that would be an option you want to consider.

    Pottery class at clayworks is pretty sweet, classes are on Tuesdays!!!
    Also, Reach Art Studio has some fun stuff going on, not in a great neighborhood, but not bad. They have a 2 day textile dying class coming up on halloween weekend.
    Old Town is also a treasure. Lots of crafty and volunteer opportunities.

    There are lots of great work/volunteer opportunities out there:
    Working with the Kitties at the humane society
    Library... very nice (Have you checked out the new Delta library, it's sweet. It even has a coffee/ beverage center that i enviously long for while pushing a double stroller. )
    Salvation Army or goodwill... and you get first dibs?!
    Serve.gov has 20+ pages of ideas (formerly volunteer.gov)

    There are a ton of social and fun options!!!

  3. I have another quite important pro for you: less cold/flue and other viral infections that you mostly get at work (and retail is a premium germ breeding ground).

    Also I have another con: No excuse to not doing all the house work and other chores that your relatives will happily put on you since you are sitting home, hence by their definition "not working" lol.

  4. Hi, I saw your blog in the VL earlier. Not sure if you made your decision yet, but I quit a job to further pursue etsy and I have been so much happier since. Granted I had another (extremely) part time job but it pays the bills, not including food. I would suggest trying to find a very part time job that you can live with. Also, I checked out a book called "My So Called Freelance Life" by Michelle Goodman which was excellent and written by an awesome feminist woman which was so refreshing. She goes over all these dilemmas and it's a quick read.

    Good Luck!
